First performed on November 28th, 1982 in Columbia, South Carolina by flutist Constance Lane, trombonist GB Lane, and pianist Charles Fugo. The recital was in celebration of the Lanes’ tenth wedding anniversary.
Composer’s Notes:
In composing this piece, I could not resist the urge to depict a love affair between the two wind instruments. The initials of the performers to whom work was dedicated (G, B & C) served as the musical germ for the entire composition. Throughout this mating ritual the role of the pianist was generally that of a chaperone.
The relationship begins with each asserting its own identity: the trombone announcing the pitches G and B, and the flute responding with a C over a three-octave span. The flirtation between the two begins tentatively but gradually develops into several frenzied encounters which are refereed by the piano. This activity leads to an ecstatic climax wherein the pianist retires, leaving the exhausted duo to bask in their restful gestures of fusion.
Some minor alteration may be necessary to perform the flute part on oboe.
