Antigona (1932)
for piccolo, oboe, English horn, trumpet, harp, and two percussion
by Carlos Chavez (1899-1978)- Mexican composer and conductor
I. Prologo
II. Episodio y Threno
This piece was originally written as incidental music for the 1932 performance of Jean Cocteau’s condensed version of “Antigone” by Sophocles. It was performed by the Grupo Orientacion, a theater company sponsored by the Secretary of Public Education of Mexico. The archaic flavor and the majestic character created by the use of Greek modal scales, harmony exclusive of thirds- considered dissonant in the Greek system- and transparent instrumental textures, continue to be the principle appeal of this fine, short chamber piece.
